An audio-visual relaxation system TAKES PATIENTS' ATTENTION AWAY FROM THEIR TREATMENT
Prodetec Oy, a company based at the Jyväskylä Science Park, has developed a relaxation system to support surgery. By audio-visual means, the system distracts the patient's attention away from his/her treatment, and, in this way, the treatment can be a considerably more pleasant experience for the patient. The RELAIO relaxation system is delivered as a service package, which comprises virtual glasses, a media server unit and media content, and it is supported by a maintenance service. During surgery, through the virtual glasses, the patient sees and hears media content presented by the system. For example, in surgery where a local anesthetic is given, the patient can concentrate on following such things as nature documentaries, comedy series or music videos, as he/she pleases.
Good experiences lead to permanent co-operationThe relaxation system was permanently introduced at the Coxa Hospital for Joint Replacement in Tampere in early summer 2006. A full two months’ experience and feedback from using the system were so positive that the hospital decided to acquire it on a permanent basis as part of its local anesthetic procedures. – The audio-visual relaxation programme provides good support for other already-existing forms of treatment for fear of surgery and nervousness. A further benefit of the system is that it, in certain cases, it reduces the need to administer sedatives to the patients. This speeds up such things as the start of rehabilitation immediately after the operation, says Jukka Huhtala, Chief Physician in Anesthesiology at the hospital.

Wide-ranging interestIn the field of medicine, an increasing amount of new products and services in well-being technology are being used, which can improve healthcare treatment processes. Many hospitals in different parts of Finland have shown an interest in this new innovative form of treatment for fear and nervousness. – Negotiations are ongoing with many interested parties, says Miikka Luukkainen, Marketing Manager of Prodetec Oy. According to Mr Luukkainen, Prodetec will in future continue to collect feedback in co-operation with the Coxa Hospital for Joint Replacement. During 2006, the company is formulating a more detailed product strategy. It is also researching into other possible application areas and looking at export possibilities.
