Successful development in a micro-company

TEKEL's Incubator Company of the Year 2007 is a virtual company operated by a three-person team. Using biotechnology specialists, BioCis Pharma Ltd from Turku develops drugs for the treatment of cancer and inflammatory diseases in humans and animals.

– As an operating model, the virtual company has been effective. For instance, there have been no breaks in communication in outsourced product development, says Lasse Leino, Managing Director of the company.

In the virtual company, most of the resource-intensive R&D has been outsourced, and research has been almost completely outsourced to service companies and research institutes in the field of pharmaceuticals. BioCis Pharma Ltd has demonstrated that new drugs can be developed without millions of euros of investment, if product development is well-planned right from the start, and cost-effectiveness is built into company strategy. Support from the incubator has also been important to the company.

– We were immediately able to direct money at product development, which was of great benefit to us. The laboratory facilities provided by the Biotech Incubator at Turku Science Park Ltd were one of the most concrete and important forms of support, says Leino gratefully.

The touchstone for drug development

The aim of this small pharmaceutical company is nonetheless the launch of a major drug. At the beginning of 2008, the first clinical research was performed for a drug based on BioCis Pharma Ltd’s patented technology. With the aid of a pharmaceutical molecule developed by the company, it is possible to regulate the internal acidity balance in sick target cells. This method has been shown to bring about remedial effects in, for example, animals suffering from cancer.

– The only drawback of the form of our company is external credibility. People are amazed how such a small group of people can accomplish something so significant. Reaching the stage of clinical research has required a lot of effort from us. We are awaiting results with great interest, admits Leino.

A future cash cow?

The interest of capital investors and the market in BioCis Pharma Ltd, which was established at the end of 2004, has also been great. The intention is to launch the first product onto the market within five years.

– We are in discussions with a couple of dozen pharmaceutical companies. Our product already has many potential customers, so we have great expectations for the future, says Leino.

Royalty income from the sales of drugs to patients is in time expected to increase the company’s cash-flow to tens of millions of euros.
